Rapunzel's Wig Tutorial 2 by echoing-artemis Rapunzel's Wig Tutorial 2 by echoing-artemis
Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XD

GOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. Kudos and credit to :iconmaybea: for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD

As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!

I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.

Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

I'm sorry to hear that! Do you mean while trying to braid? It can take a lot of patience, it's pretty fiddley.

Have you ever tried or thought about making a Merida Wig Tutorial? Because this one it's just awesome! I haven't tried it, but I've seen the results people have sent you :)
Also, I have a question about the wig styling:
-How can I make the braid look more like this? www.flickr.com/photos/jubilant…
-How can I make the bangs look more like this (more volume, like Ariel's bangs kind of) www.flickr.com/photos/jubilant…
Do I have to buy a hair clip and sew it to the wig? So the bangs get some volume? And the braid; I think I'll have to cut some thicker cotton pieces, right? Or what would you suggest?
Thank you for this tutorial, though, it's so helpful! You literally saved my life! I'll be honored if you reply. Cheers!:)

It hadn't crossed my mind! My tutorials tend to come as a sort of side-effect to the costumes I'm already making, and Merida has never made it to my list (my long long list) of plans.

To look more like the park braid, I would minimise the stuffing, potentially use more extensions, and be certain to pull it over the should before you plait the large braid.

The bangs...there's a few different methods, but there are some great tutorials out there for it! It depends on which wig you have, but most should have enough hair to get more volume. Disney definitely adds extra wefts, and while I was working at the park I was told about a styling product they used to add volume...which I now can't recall the name of.

But good luck!

Hey so if anyone needs help with the braiding part, Rapunzel's weird, half-French half-Dutch braid thing actually has a name! Its called a lace braid. It is pretty much a French braid, but you only add sections from the bottom! There are tons of awesome tutorials out there. Hope that helps someone! :D

Thank you very much for that! I am no expert on braiding, so knowing the correct term is a huge help xD

I am incredibly obsessed with how amazing this wig is. I'm trying to make it, but I can't work out how to do the first braid (the dutch/french one on the first wig).
I know how to do the braid separately, but I don't understand at all how you put them together? Any chance you could explain it a little bit more? :)

This is sooo helpful! I'm planning on being Rapunzel for Halloween, then wearing the costume again for a convention, I'll be doing a few things different, but it's still very helpful. Maybe I'll post pics and show you when the time comes, if you want :)
Already have Pascale from the disney store :P

I was looking at your FAQ, which colour of the wig did you buy? I didn't see it mentioned, if you don't mind sharing

If you follow the link in the FAQ, it takes you straight to the ebay page. There's only one blonde option, the rest are all brown.

I have a question. I have ordered a wig, but it doesn't come with a long fringe. Would it be possible to just take a section of hair and chop it off to make the fringe? If so, about how long should the fringe be?It looks about 6-10 inches in the pictures, but I'm not sure.

Also, where can you get wig heads?

You could most likely just follow the tutorial as-is - take the most forward bits of hair, blow dry them up, pin them into place and then incorporate the trailing ends into the braids. :)

I bought my wig heads from a fabric/craft/hobby chain in Australia called Lincraft - I'm sure you could find them anywhere similar!

Thanks! Here's my version of her hair. (I have no money, so I had to make do with a cheap Rapunzel wig) I just have to say thanks for the idea of putting cotton batting in the wig. It made it look soooo much better! ( I actually used cording, since it was easier for me.)

I was wondering how to get that "whoop" to stay in place! I can never get it to. The funny thing is, my girlfriend's hair does the "whoop" most of the time :P

Glad to help! As for RL, I can get mine to do it when my hair is short, but not when it's long...I definitely don't think 70ft hair would go up before it goes down! WAY too heavy xD

Then again, it is magic hair ;D

I think it might have been a dutch lace braid, you dutch braiding but you take hair every other time, so one side goes under while one get integrated in. And other ideas? LOL let try to make it easier for the cosplayers. :)

Oh I didn't mean to imply that no one's hair ever does that! I just meant that there is no way that hair 70 feet long is going to go up before it goes down. There's just too much weight there. xD

I used to have hair down to my butt, and it was always flat against my scalp no matter how much blow-drying and styling was involved. Now it's much shorter, and has a lot more body - I can get the whoop!
