Rapunzel's Wig Tutorial 1 by echoing-artemis Rapunzel's Wig Tutorial 1 by echoing-artemis
Here we go! If you want to maintain the illusion that my hair is actually magical and glowy and long and blonde, look away now. XD

GOOD GOD THAT TOOK AGES. There are five pages of this monstrosity. Kudos and credit to :iconmaybea: for the amazing beta job (she is incredible, all remaining mistakes are my own) and to Alice, my flatmate, for being that other person in Step Ten. Alice also deserves credit for putting up with me for the week it takes to make this wig. Seriously, it's hair everywhere, make sure no one is going to destroy you before you try this. And remember to clean up after yourself! XD

As it says in the tutorial this is NOT the easiest way to make this wig. Buying a bucketload of colour-matched extensions, for example, might be easier. I had no luck finding golden blonde extensions though (as opposed to ash, platinum, etc) and I am a pedantic little twit. You may have more luck than me though!

I really hope someone finds this useful. I'm posting it by popular demand and I've seen a lot of people wondering how to tackle it, so hopefully it'll come in handy! It's lovely to be able to feed back into a community that has given me so much. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to answer, and if there are a lot of them, I'll post a FAQ.

Please let me know if you use this tutorial - credit is optional (though appreciated), really I just want to see how others go! XD

Good luck! Follow your heart, make a wig, find your Eugene (...profit?).

would 5 of this wig work? www.epiccosplay.com/theia-20-r…
I'd really like your opinion, since you made such a lovely tutorial and apparently know about such things. ;)

Suggestion:

Some people won't know what you mean by 'fringe' and 'caulk', and sometimes Google doesn't yield the most helpful responses. Perhaps add a little bit in your description (or somewhere) of what certain terms or steps might mean.

=)

The caulk question is already answered in the FAQ, but I have to admit this is the first time I've been asked about fringes! A fringe is the part of your hair that sits on your forehead, that's usually cut shorter than the rest. Sometimes its generally referred to as "bangs" (especially in the US). Wiki article here.

I know what these things are, but many people might not. That's why I made the suggestion. =)

If i bought a longer wig would i still need to buy five extra wigs?

I doubt it! I only needed that many because they were shorter - just get enough to cover the extensions. :)

Have you had any issues with the wig colour fading/discolouration?
Reply
:iconechoing-artemis:
echoing-artemis Featured By Owner Sep 5, 2013
Nope! I've worn it three times and the only long-term issue was the matting that happens underneath where it rubs against your back. I saw one Punzie cosplayer address that by wrapping the wig in a really faint netting, so that's a possibility.

Why are you so awesome????? I am totally going to use this. One question though. Do you remember where you got the wig and what color it was?

Also, about how much did it cost? Over $100? Less? More?

Yup, I even have the link (since the ebayer still sells the same wig). You can find it all in the FAQ over here.

And as the other lovely commenter said, it was about AU$180-200, which makes it about USD$160-$180. :)

In USD, it's roughly 160 dollars, give or take.

Thank you so much for making this!! All the tutorials on YouTube were shorter than the movie version or went over the shoulder or were too thin. This will help a lot for my cosplay in May! :D THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!! :iconsuperheroglompplz:

Hmm, I might have to try this way for making my Rapunzel wig! It looks really good! Mine might have to be a bit longer though, I'm quite tall...

This is GORGEOUS. I really want to cosplay Rapunzel, but I'm a bit frightened. I'm absolutely horrendious with wigs, but 200 is a lot more acceptable than 500. ;A;

I did have a question for you, though. How tall are you? I only ask because I'm EXTREMELY short. 4'10" and a 1/2. o__O Or 148.59cm (not sure how you measure there). Do you think I'd need 5 wigs or would 4 wigs pass for me? Thanks so much.

omg thanks for giving me the cms too, I literally have no idea in feet. I'm about 167cms, think? So I'd say you're probably pretty safe with 4 (especially since I had some left over for repairs too).

GOOD LUCK it makes me super happy to think I've helped someone take on a challenge they may not have otherwise xD

were your extensions wefted? if not how did you connect them to the wig(s)?
Reply
:iconechoing-artemis:
echoing-artemis Featured By Owner Feb 21, 2013
Do you mean the long crimped extensions? I wefted them (sort of) by using caulk. You could probably achieve the same with other wefting methods (such as sewing), I was just most confident this particular way. It's up to you!

Here I am, thanking you more than a year after I first saw your amazing tutorial! The thing is, I didn't have a youtube account at that time, so I didn't have the chance to let you know how much it helped me. Rapunzel's braid has been my very first attempt at styling a wig and, let's face it, it wouldn't have been possible without your tutorial. I've made my own adjustments, cause I couldn't spend too much money, but the basics are yours. I'm sorry for my english... I hope at least half of what I wrote is comprehensible XD Anyway... thank you sooo much for sharing *-*

The wefts are actually destroyed/cut apart wigs. The wigs are the same one as the base (so on ebay). Does that help?

Your wig is great !! :) I'm wondering what color number or company (they name colors differently) you got your wig from. I'm starting a wig of my own, had to go online 'cause no actually wig stores here etc. and while the blond wig I got will work I was hoping for something more golden :) Thanks!

Thank you for saying so! I did an FAQ for the wig over here, which might help you! The wig is from ebay, and the exact wig is linked there. :)

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm really excited to try this. I made a wig using another tutorial on the site but in the end the wig was too bulky and very difficult to move around in. This seems like a much better method.

I won't lie, it's still pretty heavy/bulky! Such is the way of Punzie's hair, I think. But it was definitely manageable, so it's worth a go!
